Have you ever read a book and feel like you're actually there with the character? That's why imagery is important. When you experience something in real life, your senses pick up the colors, textures, smells, and sounds of your environment. In a story, writers try to describe the characters' environment as best as they can so you can percieve all of the things you would if you were actually there. It makes the story more intruiging and interesting.
