Was Edgar's brain really taken in the anime Hakushaku To Yousei / Earl and Fairy?

I've watched the series before and am just rewatching and noticed that there's talk of his brain being taken for studies in episode 2 and 3. I'm kind of confused about that because he said that he was acting strangely since his brain was taken, but he still knows who he is and still have his memories....so what's going on?
